Buying an electric vehicle (EV) might only be the first step of the journey as the most significant part is figuring out the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep it charged i.e. charging at home.

A dedicated home EV charger offers far more convenience than relying on public charging stations. Instead of planning trips around charging locations, you simply plug your vehicle in when you get home and wake up to a fully charged battery the next morning.

What is a home EV charger?

A home EV charger is a charging unit installed at your place that allows you to recharge your EV safely and efficiently. Most homeowners choose a dedicated Level 2 charger, although every EV can also be charged using a standard household outlet through a Level 1 charging cable.

Level 1 charging requires no installation but is significantly slower, meanwhile, a dedicated Level 2 charger uses a 240V electrical circuit and dramatically reduces charging times.

How fast can you charge at home?

Home charging speeds largely depend on the charger's power output and your vehicle's onboard charging capability.

Most residential chargers are available in outputs such as 3.6kW, 7.4kW, 11kW and 22kW. A typical 7.4kW charger can add approximately 15 to 30 miles of driving range per hour, while many 40-amp Level 2 chargers operating at around 9.6kW can restore roughly 30 miles of range every hour.

Installing a home EV charger

Unlike portable charging cables, dedicated home charging stations should always be professionally installed.

The process involves mounting the charger on an exterior wall or inside a garage near your parking space before connecting it safely to your home's electrical system. Depending on the property and electrical setup, installation generally takes only a few hours.

How much does home charging cost?

One of the biggest strengths of charging at home is lower running costs. Rather than paying premium public charging rates, homeowners only pay for the electricity their vehicle consumes.

Choosing the right home charger

Not every charger suits every household, so it's worth considering a few important factors before making a purchase.

Consider your budget, charging speed requirements, cable length, installation type, and vehicle compatibility. Some premium models also include Wi-Fi connectivity, smartphone apps, charging schedules, load balancing, and solar integration, while simpler plug-and-charge units focus purely on dependable charging performance.

Hence, a home EV charger offers unmatched convenience, lower charging costs, and the confidence of starting each day with a fully charged battery.
