Following years of speculation and heartbreaking delays for enthusiasts, the mystery behind Grand Theft Auto VI’s delayed launch seems to have an explanation, finally, as a former Rockstar Games developer has spilt the beans.

GTA 6, the much-anticipated title, was originally scheduled to launch late in 2025, but it has now been pushed to May 2026.

While fans were recently graced with a second trailer of the immensely popular title, a new development has taken the world by surprise, coming from a reaction video, as noted by XDA Developers.

David O’Reily, a former 3D environment artist who spent 12 years at Rockstar and worked on GTA VI from 2018 to 2023, disclosed in a YouTube video that the game’s development began after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, not in 2014, as had been rumoured.

This indicates that instead of a decade-long development cycle, GTA VI has been in the works only for almost seven years, a more reasonable timeframe for such a game.

The former Rockstart employee's comments suggest that the developer chose to focus entirely on Red Dead Redemption 2 before shifting its full focus to the next entry in the GTA series.
