Nintendo has announced a new GameCube controller for the upcoming Switch 2 console, but fans are unhappy about a surprising restriction.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the next big gaming console from the company, and it will launch with many exciting features. One of the highlights is the return of the GameCube controller, which many fans remember from Nintendo’s 2001 GameCube console.
It’s a favourite for classic games like The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Mario Kart: Double Dash. But now, there’s a catch.
Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller limitations
In a recent video showcase, Nintendo revealed that the new GameCube controller will only work with games from the GameCube Classics library. This means the controller will not support other Switch 2 titles, even though the buttons could have worked for them.
Moreover, popular titles like Super Smash Bros. won't be playable with the controller, and this has left fans very disappointed.
Many gamers quickly reacted online, calling the decision strange. Some said they would rather use the Pro Controller 2, which works with all Switch 2 games. Others shared their wishlists for GameCube games they want to see on Switch 2, such as Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Animal Crossing, and Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller release date
The new GameCube controller will be released on June 5, 2025, alongside the Switch 2. Nintendo has confirmed that classic titles like The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2 will be available on day one, with more games to come.
