In a groundbreaking collaboration, Toyota Motor and Waymo have announced to jointly develop a next-generation autonomous vehicle platform, in line with the worldwide push to advance self-driving technology.
In a statement released on Wednesday, both companies confirmed they were exploring how Toyota can build a new vehicle platform to be integrated into Waymo’s driverless fleet.
The two automotive titans are also planning to figure out a way to incorporate Waymo’s self-driving technology into Toyota’s futuristic personally owned vehicles (POVs).
“The aim is to accelerate the development and adoption of driver assistance and autonomous driving systems for personal vehicles,” read a notification released jointly by the companies.
What makes this team-up more valuable is that Toyota’s advanced tech arm, Woven by Toyota, will also play a part.
Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving venture, has been expanding through partnerships with renowned automakers like Hyundai, Zeekr, and Uber.
In a separate move to expand its footprint globally, Waymo recently started collecting data in Tokyo using human-operated vehicles to better understand the city’s driving conditions.
On the other hand, Woven by Toyota is working on its Arene automotive software platform and creating Woven City, an inspection platform for smart mobility systems in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
