
Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has advertised a job opening for “chief of staff” with no initial salary stated for the applicants, rather requiring them to pay INR 2,000,000 ($23,700) fee to take the role.
The details of the job state that the candidates should be “down to earth” with “Grade A communication skills.” The role requirement involves helping build Zomato and its vertical Blinkit. Goyal promises an annual salary of at least 5 million INR ($60,000) from the second year if the candidate is successful.

The Zomato top-shot justifies the requirement for the top position by saying that the job will give “10x more learnings” than any of the top-tier MBA degrees in two years can offer.
This offer has sparked an ongoing debate among locals, with some believing that the role provides a unique learning opportunity, while others criticising and arguing that the recruitment process excludes talent by overlooking financially constrained candidates and favouring the privileged.
The exclusivity of the job was highlighted by critics like diversity expert Aparna Mittal and former employee of Flipkart Deepak Singh. Supporters like programmer Arnav Gupta have pointed out the job as beneficial for aspiring management consulting.
It is one of the largest food delivery companies in India, valued at over $28 billion. Moreover, it has been expanding rapidly in commerce, delivering groceries within 10 minutes and its share price has doubled this year.
The advertisement for the role has received over 5 million views, while also drawing a flood of criticism yet the company has not commented on the public outrage.
