The Punjab government is preparing to implement its long-awaited electric taxi scheme in August 2025, with an eco-friendly mode of transport at the heart of this initiative.
Notably, the e-taxi scheme has already reserved 30 e-taxis for women drivers.
Punjab's e-taxi scheme
Under the leadership of Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, the launch is set to roll out 1,100 e-taxis in a pilot phase and distribute them to fleet owners, ride-hailing companies, and individual drivers.
The process will be simplified with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) creating an online portal for drivers to fill out the application.
Moreover, the vehicles will be provided via interest-free instalments; the government has committed to cover other costs, such as fees for markup, token tax, and registration.
According to the official documents, 1,000 e-taxis will be distributed across fleet owners, each of whom must buy 10 cars.
The other 100 will be for individuals, including the 30 electric e-taxis for women. This will place women in a position in a space dominated by men.
Nine companies have been finalised to provide the vehicles. These companies will also be responsible for setting up charging and servicing stations, as well as spare parts.
