Starlink is likely to launch its services in Bangladesh soon, extending its satellite internet bandwidth to more parts of the world.

Veon Ltd, a Dubai-based telecommunications platform, has confirmed that discussions are underway to expand its collaboration with Starlink.

Veon, which owns Banglalink (the country’s third-largest mobile operator), plans to bring satellite-powered connectivity to several countries, including Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and others.

In a statement about the importance of satellite and terrestrial networks, Veon CEO Kaan Terzioglu said, “It’s not only about the war situation. Terrestrial networks have their limits. During times of floods or energy deficiencies, which our markets are exposed to, we truly believe that markets need both space-based and terrestrial network coverage.”

He further outlined Veon’s broader expansion strategy, which includes providing telecom access to underserved areas of the region. This strategy also involves exploring ventures in a variety of sectors, including entertainment, finance, and more.

According to Banglalink, Starlink will offer its full range of services in Bangladesh once the partnership between Veon and Starlink is finalised. However, the services are not yet available in all markets and will require spectrum allocation, which can be costly and difficult to secure.

Veon is also exploring opportunities in growing markets such as Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Mexico. “We are continuously looking for under-performing assets in these countries,” Terzioglu added.
