In a surprising move, WhatsApp has announced to end support for older Android smartphones, starting from January 1, 2025.
Applying to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, this decision might impact millions of WhatsApp users worldwide.
Given that, if you are using an Android phone with the Android KitKat version that was released 10 years ago, it is time to upgrade and buy a new Android phone to continue using WhatsApp.
Devices not compatible with WhatsApp
WhatsApp will not be available on the following Android devices.
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
One of the significant reasons behind this move is that newer versions of Android OS systems include upgraded APIs and enhanced technologies.
This upgrade will allow the Meta-owned instant messaging app to provide more demanding features and artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities.
It should be noted that earlier this month, WhatsApp announced a similar decision for iPhones running on iOS older than version 15.1 but the support for these handsets will be retained until May 2025.
