Apple is changing the way it launches iPhones. Next year, the company may skip the standard iPhone 18 release. Instead, the first launch in September 2026 could include only premium models: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Fold.

The iPhone Fold represents a new class of smartphone that unfolds like a tablet, putting a bigger screen in one's pocket.

Reportedly, later in spring 2027, there will be lower-cost variants of the iPhone: the iPhone Air 2 and iPhone 18e. These are supposed to make the iPhones more affordable to buyers on tighter budgets, whereas the iPhone Fold could top the price scale.

According to Fubon Research Analyst Arthur Liao, the foldable could kick off at around $2,399 (around Rs673,039) because of the high cost of components. OLED panels, advanced hinges, and lightweight internals all bump up the price.

It is expected that overall global smartphone shipments will decline in 2026, with the iPhone shipments falling to 234 million units. On top of that, Liao reckons increasing RAM prices and chip shortages are forcing up manufacturing costs.

It has also been reported that Apple may adopt crease-free foldable panels from Samsung, too, further adding to the premium pricing.

For buyers in Pakistan, that might translate into an even higher price due to import taxes and duties. However, the analyst thinks Apple will be able to sell 15.4 million foldables in total and 5.4 million in the first year despite the price. The Apple strategy is a clear indication that it is targeting tech enthusiasts who would pay a premium for new innovations.
