In a move deemed unfavourable for overseas Pakistanis holding dual nationality, the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment in Pakistan is expected to abolish dual nationality for Pakistanis.

The law is part of a significant clause under the impending constitutional amendment.

If the law is enacted, any Pakistani citizen having citizenship of another country would automatically lose their Pakistani nationality.

This amendment is part of broader constitutional reforms being discussed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government and its allied parties.

The draft amendment also suggests the establishment of a Constitutional Court, the restoration of executive magistrates, and revisions to the distribution of powers between the federal government and the provinces.

Analysts are of the view that ending dual nationality could impact thousands of overseas Pakistanis who currently hold citizenship in other countries while retaining their Pakistani nationality.

This enormous change may also affect the eligibility of dual nationals to hold public office, sparking considerable debate across social and political platforms.

As the 27th Amendment Bill is still under consideration, its final draft has yet to be presented in Parliament.

The government aims to build a broad political consensus before proceeding with the legislation.

The consequences of the proposed amendment are likely to reshape the rights of many Pakistanis living abroad and alter their relationship with their home country.
