In a significant boost for Pakistan’s digital economy, a new independent study has revealed that foodpanda, Pakistan's largest online delivery service, added an incredible $1.2 billion (Rs335 billion) to the country's economy in the fiscal year 2023-24.

This research, conducted by the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), is the first comprehensive economic impact assessment of foodpanda’s operations in Pakistan.

By analysing rich data and running it through economic impact modelling, the LUMS study shows how foodpanda has not only been delivering food but has invested in job creation, empowerment of small businesses, and the advancement of Pakistan’s digital and financial ecosystem.

The report shows foodpanda generated Rs75 billion in revenue for restaurants (GMV) in FY 2023-24, paid Rs9.76 billion in tax and created opportunities for over 50000 freelance riders, many of whom use foodpanda as their daily income source.

The most remarkable statistic is the 100% income growth for over 13,000 partner restaurants, while 7,000+ HomeChefs (primarily women) earned an average of Rs120,000 per month, which is incredible.

Speaking to Gadinsider, foodpanda Pakistan CEO Muntaqa Peracha shared the company’s vision moving forward: “Our main aim now is to expand this app beyond food deliveries to include D-marts and shops and bring them onto our platform so that customers can purchase their essentials through us. We have already expanded foodpanda to 35 cities, and we plan that once this goal is fully achieved in these 35 cities, we will further expand these services to more cities.”

According to LUMS Associate Professor Dr Kashif Z. Malik, foodpanda is playing a critical role in supporting growth across different sectors, including transport, manufacturing, and hospitality.

Moreover, he noted that the company has helped thousands of individuals gain access to entrepreneurship and fintech-based income streams, particularly in underserved areas.
