During the Google I/O 2025, the company offered the attendees with a first-hand experience of its new Android XR glasses, which suggests that Google is taking a leap into augmented reality.

The new Android XR glasses form part of Google's increasing emphasis on extended reality (XR) technology. The glasses are intended to merge digital information with the real world to deliver an immersive AR experience.

During I/O 2025, Google announced unexpectedly to the attendees that it will be offering live demos of Android XR glasses during the event. This is the largest public preview of the gadget until now.

Android's head Sameer Samat closed out The Android Show with a surprise tease. He donned a pair of Android XR sunglasses with a camera lens that can be seen on the right side.

These new glasses are designed for daily use, both indoors and out, and have clear lenses rather than fully darkened ones.

Last December, a few media representatives were able to test early releases of the hardware.

In April, Google offered a live, on-stage demo. Today, the I/O 2025 conference will permit a larger pool of developers and tech fans to experience the Android XR form factor for themselves.

Notably, this is an extension of Google's marketing tactic to generate interest and create excitement for its AR platform.

While the glasses are making headlines, they still aren't launch-ready. Android XR will debut on headsets first, and a release should come later this year in conjunction with Samsung.

During I/O, Google also demonstrated how its AI assistant, Gemini, will function on XR headsets. While hardware previews have been done, there is still no talk of pricing or final specs.
