The federal government is preparing to roll out a landmark initiative to promote electric vehicles (EVs) by distributing 116,000 electric bikes on an installment plan over two years.

According to officials, the program is nearing completion. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to officially launch the country's new EV policy on Independence Day.

The scheme is being developed jointly with the State Bank and the Bank Association with a Rs50,000 subsidy for every electric bike and rickshaw. The programme will be open to all citizens aged 18 to 65 years old.

The price of each e-bike is expected to be Rs250,000. Buyers will put down a reduced upfront payment after the subsidy, roughly Rs50,000, and will spread the remaining Rs200,000 payable by affordable monthly installments.

Notably, 17 companies have obtained licenses to manufacture e-bikes locally and will ensure that supply is not an issue for the aggressive goal of the programme. The state ambition is part of a larger EV strategy, whereby 30% of vehicles in Pakistan will be electric by 2030.

The state has allocated Rs100 billion in subsidies over the next five years. This includes Rs9 billion for the current fiscal year and ramps up to Rs26 billion by 2029. The target in 2030 is to have 2.2 million electric vehicles on the road. And in the long-term vision, 90% EVs.
