After the groundbreaking launch of MacBook Pro equipped with M3 chip last year and having introduced the same chip in its MacBook Air lineup, the iPhone maker is reportedly working on an updated iteration of its MacBook Pro backed by the yet-to-release M4 chip.

The appearance of the recent rumour has been made possible by a renowned speculator, also famed for being a Bloomberg correspondent, Mark Gurman who reflected on a MacBook variant being in the development phase during the Q&A session of his popular Power On newsletter.

According to Gurman, Apple has “just begun formal development” of a new MacBook Pro powered by the M4 chip, whose release is far from coming to light as the gadget and its chip is reportedly in the pipeline.

The most recent MacBook Pro was released in October 2023, marking the debut of Apple's M3 chip, which utilises the same 3-nanometer technology found in the A17 Pro chip of the iPhone 15 Pro. Besides M3, Apple also introduced the more robust M3 Pro and M3 Max for the premium variants of the MacBook Pro.

Not only the MacBook Pro, but the MacBook Air and iMac have also received updates featuring the M3 chip. However, the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro are yet to receive the M3 update. Meanwhile, the company might take at least another year to reveal its first MacBook based on the M4 chip.

Rumours also suggest that the M4 will be built on the A18, Apple's upcoming chip for this year's iPhones. Both are said to be running on more Neural Engine cores to handle AI-related chores, which will be in abundance in iOS 18 and macOS 15. The already existing Neural Engine of the A17 Pro chip is capable to process up to 35 trillion operations every second.
