The Sindh government announced on Sunday the routes for newly imported double-decker and electric vehicle (EV) buses, which are set to begin operations in Karachi from January 2026.

Reportedly, five diesel-powered double-decker buses have been planned to operate on Shahrah-e-Faisal, starting from Model Colony and heading towards Tower, and vice versa. This particular path has been chosen owing to the heavy flow of commuters on it.

It is worth mentioning that Karachi will witness the introduction of double-decker buses for the first time in nearly six to seven decades. According to Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Managing Director Kanwal Nizam Bhutto, each double-decker will have a capacity to carry 115 to 120 passengers. Those will be completely air-conditioned.

She further clarified that the buses are fitted with convertible roofs that can be opened when the weather is favourable and closed when it is either hot or rainy, providing an additional element of comfort for the users.

Apart from the double-deckers, the government has announced that 34 EV buses are to be placed on new routes in the city. These include the route from Gulshan-e-Maymar to Tower, while the Peoples Bus Service is also to be extended into the upper Sindh cities, including Hyderabad, Khairpur, Sukkur, and Shikarpur.

The Sindh government has imported a cumulative total of 39 buses, which include five double-decker and 34 EV buses, that will cost them Rs3 billion. These purchases will soon receive clearance at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

Soon, the inauguration of these services will be done by the Sindh Transport Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon. According to some reports, this launch will be done as part of the first phase and will follow the import of further buses in the future, perhaps even double-deckers that are electric.
