The federal government on Tuesday hiked the price of petrol by Rs4.07 per litre and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs4.04 for the next fortnight.

A press release from the Finance Division said the revised prices were based on recommendations by Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the relevant Ministries.

Following an increase of over Rs4 per litre, petrol will now cost Rs268.68 per litre, up from Rs264.31. The latest price of HSD is Rs276.18 from Rs272.77 per litre, read the notification.

On August 15, Shehbaz Sharif-led government kept petrol prices unchanged at Rs264.61. However, the price of diesel was increased by Rs2.78 per litre.

The increased cost of petrol and high-speed diesel directly contributes to the rising prices of commute fares, vegetables and other essential food items.
