In an effort to ensure compliance with traffic rules, authorities in Karachi have implemented a new mandatory helmet rule as part of the recently implemented AI-based traffic monitoring system, launched last month.

The system has surprised many as residents are reportedly receiving e-challans despite believing they are following traffic regulations. The new measures are said to have stirred confusion, particularly among motorcyclists and car passengers.

DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah explained that the system is designed to automatically detect all safety violations, not just the obvious ones like seat belts and helmets. As a result, citizens are receiving unexpected penalties for infractions they may not have realised they were committing.

Part of the new rules is that both the motorcycle driver and the pillion rider are required to wear helmets at all times.

If the driver complies but the passenger does not, an automatic fine will be issued. In cars, front-seat passengers must also wear seat belts, as the system treats an unbelted passenger the same as an unbelted driver.

DIG Shah advised delivery riders to keep an extra helmet for any accompanying passenger, warning that failure to do so will result in fines under the new enforcement model.

The development shows that Karachi's traffic authorities are aiming to ensure compliance with safety measures as the city modernises its monitoring systems.
