Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government is expected to once again increase petrol prices in Pakistan, as it looks to secure higher revenues and meet IMF conditions.

As per sources, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has continued to push Pakistan to remove subsidies and depend more on direct taxation, including higher petroleum levies, to maintain fiscal discipline. The government has reportedly assured the IMF that it will continue with tight financial management.

It is important to note that petroleum levy collections are likely to exceed the annual target of Rs1,468 billion, while discussions are underway to push the levy even higher in the coming months.

Will govt increase petrol price in Pakistan?

The Ministry of Finance will officially announce petroleum prices today, after consultation with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and approval by the premier.

If the Ministry of Finance announce an increase in petroleum prices, then it will impact household budgets, particularly for low- and middle-income families who are already struggling with high inflation.

Earlier, the federal government announced a Rs26.77 per litre increase in the price of petrol and high-speed diesel each. Following the increase, the price of HSD has jumped from Rs353.42 to Rs380.19, while the petrol price now stands at Rs393.35.
