The Punjab government has unveiled a landmark green transportation initiative that aims to tackle air pollution and improve travel safety and modernity.
As part of this initiative, 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging locations will be established in the province, and approximately 600 electric buses will be launched in the first phase.
This initiative is part of the government's overall environmentally friendly public transport strategy that reduces dependence on fuel stations.
In a meeting at the Civil Secretariat via video link on Friday, the project was evaluated by Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, who was joined by senior government officials including secretaries for health and transport, the CEO of the Lahore Waste Management Company, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners.
During the meeting, Chief Secretary Zaman instructed all deputy commissioners to report to him and find suitable locations for EV charging stations and bus depots in their respective districts.
Zaman added that the objective of this initiative is to provide the public with modern, safe, and comfortable transport services in line with international environmental standards.
He also ordered a strict crackdown against overloading in public transport, which often puts passengers at risk. “Citizens deserve public transport that is both safe and efficient,” the chief secretary said.
Alongside the transport plan, the chief secretary stressed the need to eliminate corruption in the revenue department, speed up the computerisation of land records, and take strong action to control stray dog bite cases, which continue to be a public health concern in many areas.
