Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a major Rs80 per litre cut in petrol price, moving down the precious commodity's rate significantly after a steep rise.

Addressing the nation, the premier said that the new petrol price in Pakistan is Rs378 per litre, which is set for a month. Along with the fuel price adjustment, the prime minister also announced strict austerity steps that the salaries and privileges of cabinet members will remain suspended for the next six months.

The prime minister began his address by saying he is once again addressing the nation at a challenging time, with the ongoing Middle East conflict of the United States (US), Israel, and Iran.

Addressing the nation, PM Shehbaz said the oil prices have skyrocketed in the entire region, creating difficulties for the common man. “Oil prices have increased significantly in global markets. Inflation has broken the backs of the world’s powerful economies,” he added.

The premier has also announced a Rs100 subsidy for motorcyclists and a monthly subsidy of Rs70,000 for small trucks. The prime minister further said that large trucks will be given Rs80,000. Public transport operators will receive Rs100,000 per month."

While addressing the nation, the pm said he had tried his best to utilise the “national resources, which are limited”, to reduce those difficulties and for the public welfare.

To support freight vehicles, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs100 on fuel on a per litre basis. "Small farmers will be given financial assistance of Rs1,500 per acre to ease their burden amid rising costs." said the prime minister, adding that fares for economy class in Pakistan Railways will not be increased.

Reiterating that oil prices had soared in international markets, he said, adding that even big economies were struggling in the face of rising inflation. “Certainly, Pakistan is also badly affected by it,” he said.
