Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Friday approved the launch of the country's first-ever bullet train, which will connect Lahore and Rawalpindi cities. The aim is to cut travel time between them to a mere two and a half hours.

The bullet train project received in-principle approval during a meeting. Various models were discussed, including the option of a collaboration between private enterprises and Pakistan Railways to operate the service.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has been tasked with liaising with Pakistan Railways and pushing the project forward.

In addition to the bullet train, Punjab also aims to bring high-speed trains to other corridors. These are Lahore to Shahdara and Narowal, Lahore to Raiwind and Kasur, and Pakpattan to Lodhran. Maryam Nawaz directed expedited surveys and studies on these corridors with May and June deadlines.

Moreover, the progress updates were also presented for other Punjab transport schemes such as the Lahore Yellow Line, Gujranwala Mass Transit, and the new e-taxi service.

They are all part of a larger plan to modernise the province's transport system and provide quicker, more convenient travel options for the populace.
