Thailand, a desired destination for tourists globally, is set to expand its electronic visa (e-Visa) system starting January 1, 2025, for travellers worldwide.
This move aims to simplify the visa application process, allowing foreigners to apply for a Thailand e-visa through the official website, www.thaievisa.go.th.
Expansion of Thailand e-Visa
The e-Visa system expansion was announced by Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa during the "Kick-off THAI E-VISA: Apply, Anywhere, Anytime" event.
Initially introduced in 2019 as a pilot programme for select European diplomatic missions, the e-Visa system expanded gradually and covered 59 embassies and consulates, as of October 2024.
However, the e-visa facility is now being expanded to other notable countries, including India, Pakistan, Kuwait, and Laos.
The e-Visa system offers several benefits, including reduced paperwork, faster processing times, and improved integration of databases with relevant agencies.
The e-Visa system also eliminates unnecessary complexities, aligning with Thailand's broader strategy to position itself as a global hub for tourism, commerce, and international trade.
Thailand to introduce ETA in 2025
Additionally, Thailand is exploring the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in 2025, aiming to provide a more flexible entry process for travellers from visa-exempt countries.
These countries include China, India, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK, and more.
