In a surprising move, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature to allow users in India to pay their bills directly from within the app.

The functionality was discovered through an APK teardown of WhatsApp's latest beta version for Android. The most noteworthy point is that India is the largest WhatsApp market globally, with over 500 million users.

The new WhatsApp feature builds upon WhatsApp's existing payment features in India, which enable users to send money to contacts and make payments to businesses via UPI.

WhatsApp’s bill payment feature is expected to support various categories, including electricity bills, mobile prepaid recharges, LPG gas payments, water bills, landline postpaid bills, and rent payments.

Although this list remains tentative unless officially confirmed by the company, it gives insight into the feature's potential capabilities.

WhatsApp's bill payments feature will likely expand its financial service offerings in the region and a broader push to promote WhatsApp Pay among Indian users.

It's also worth mentioning that India's National Payments Corporation recently lifted the cap on WhatsApp Pay's user onboarding, enabling the service to reach over 500 million WhatsApp users in India.

While the launch timeline for this feature is uncertain, it is anticipated to arrive within the next few months.
