X (formerly Twitter) is set to explore a new feature, which would let users block others from direct messaging (DM) them. While in a way that’s different from the account-blocking feature.

Currently, when you block an account, that account can not be involved with you through public posts or DM. With the new feature, Elon Musk’s social network X would have two separate blocking functions, one for personal messaging and one for public posting.

Earlier, a few app detectives published screenshots of how DM blocks would look. X (formerly Twitter) CEO Elon Musk said: “DMs are being decoupled from public posting so that if you all want to use this platform for messaging but not post publicly, you can do so.”

In the past, Musk has discussed an ambition to “superset Signal” — that is, have all the functionality of Signal but also more — including features like end-to-end encryption. It’s possible, then, that differentiating how public and DM blocks work is an initial step towards making X a more robust messaging app for those who don’t want to engage with its public social network.

It is important to note that DMs have undergone other upgrades recently. Earlier this month, the company integrated a feature that allows you to edit a message for someone, for instance.
