China's off-road market is all set for a major change with the launch of the BAIC BJ40e EREV on April 7, 2025. This range-extended electric SUV (EREV) puts together the punch of off-road capability and sophisticated electric technology, providing an astonishing 1200km driving range.
As pre-orders commenced in December 2024, the BJ40e EREV has received widespread interest, and it is now a strong contender in the emerging electric off-road SUV market.
BAIC BJ40e EREV powerful hybrid performance
The BAIC BJ40e EREV is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged gasoline engine (185 hp), which is used as a generator for its 40.3 kWh lithium battery. The engine does not power the wheels directly but instead charges the battery, which powers two electric motors, one per axle, delivering a total of 540 hp and 655 Nm of torque. This configuration enables the SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds.
Though powerful, the BJ40e is a fuel-sipper; its WLTC-rated fuel economy is a mere 1.39 L/100 km. Its pure electric range is 152 km, and its total range is 1200 km. The battery is DC fast charging-capable, charging to 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.
BAIC BJ40e EREV design and features
The BJ40e EREV retains the rugged, boxy appearance of its second-generation petrol model, which went on sale late in 2023. The SUV's tough, off-road-capable stance features flared fenders and angular bodywork.
The interior offers a high-tech cabin with a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel and twin 12.8-inch infotainment screens driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor. An AI voice assistant is added to the driving experience.
BAIC BJ40e EREV size and price
Measuring 4,790 mm in length, 1,940 mm in width, and 1,964 mm in height with a 2,760 mm wheelbase, the BJ40e EREV matches the size of the Mazda CX-50.
Priced between 224,800 yuan ($30,770) and 244,800 yuan ($33,500) in China, the BJ40e EREV offers a solid option in the electric off-road SUV market.
