Karachi's traffic authorities have issued a strict warning to all bikers in the city, stating that anyone caught riding without a valid licence will pay a new Rs20,000 fine as part of the new enforcement measures to curb traffic violations.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Police Pir Muhammad Shah said the department will have zero tolerance for unlicensed riders under the new enforcement measures.
He called on citizens to get their licences renewed immediately, noting that there would be no goodwill after riders incur the fine.
Shah also indicated that the speed limit in Karachi has been set at 60 kmph for all vehicles, irrespective of vehicle size. Drivers who exceed this fixed limit will receive speeding tickets through the upgraded monitoring system.
Karachi's faceless e-challan system launched
Karachi's new faceless e-challan system is officially operational. On the first day, traffic authorities issued 2,662 electronic challans, netting over Rs12.5 million in fines in under six hours.
Significant technology upgrades have been implemented to improve the accuracy of the digital system, according to Shah. The total number of violations on day one was extensive, with 1,535 incidents involving not wearing a seat belt, 507 people riding a motorcycle without a helmet, 419 speeding violations, 166 red light violators, and 3 incidents of lane discipline violations.
The traffic department will maintain a firm crackdown in Karachi with the intention of limiting road infractions to ensure safer traffic in the city.
