Pakistan has officially finalised a dual nationality agreement with Germany, which will allow overseas Pakistanis to hold citizenship of both countries.

According to a notification issued by the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin, all codal formalities required to choose the dual nationality arrangement have been completed.

Germany has now been added to the list of countries with which Pakistan allows dual citizenship. "It may please be noted that Pakistan-origin German residents applying for German nationality are no more required to renounce their Pakistani nationality."

This move follows the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2024, which established dual nationality agreements with 22 countries. The law was approved by the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Interior to address long-standing issues faced by overseas Pakistanis.

It should be noted that this applies to Pakistan-origin German nationals who had earlier renounced their Pakistani citizenship.

Pakistan currently allows dual nationality with several countries under specific legal frameworks. The inclusion of Germany expands these arrangements and affects a large Pakistani diaspora residing there.
