The Sindh government announced strict traffic measures for Karachi. Any driver who does not pay off their traffic fines in Karachi will be subject to suspension of their driving license and the blocking of their CNIC.

After the provincial cabinet approved changing some of the traffic laws, Inspector General of Police (IGP Sindh) Ghulam Nabi Memon explained the policy.

The intent is to stop repeat offenders or at least to discourage their behaviour, and to allow for safer driving of citizens through the establishment of a digital e-challan system throughout Sindh.

Sindh government's new rules

Under the new traffic rules:

  • Traffic violations will almost rise from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 250,000 depending on the offence.
  • For major offences primarily dangerous to human life, fines will rise to ten times.
  • If fines are not paid within 21 days, the fine will double.
  • If not paid within 90 days, the driver's license will be cancelled.
  • If fines are not paid within 180 days, the CNIC will be blocked.

The government will also:

  • Create traffic courts in Karachi where a citizen can appeal a fine.
  • Produce video evidence of the offence through recorded surveillance footage.
  • Require heavy vehicles to have cameras and tracking devices.
  • Eliminate manual enforcement and switch to an automated e-challan system with traffic cameras.

IGP Memon said these steps will bring fairness, transparency, and accountability to traffic management. Citizens can now appeal fines in court, but they will need solid proof to contest them.
