Mozilla has officially announced the launch of an 'AI kill switch' for its Firefox app, which will give users full control over artificial intelligence (AI) features.
As per the company, an update set for February 24 that will add a new 'AI control' option to Firefox’s settings menu, allowing you to disable or enable the browser’s individual AI features, including access to a built-in AI chatbot, translations, AI tab group suggestions, and more.
The company has designed the feature for users who prefer a more traditional browsing experience and are uncomfortable with the growing role of AI in modern browsers. Firefox users will be able to manage AI tools individually.
These include translations, AI-generated alt text in PDF files, AI-powered tab grouping, link previews, and the AI chatbot available in the browser’s sidebar. You can turn everything off with one click or take a more granular approach. At launch, these features can be controlled individually:
- Translations, helping you to browse the web in your preferred language.
- Alt text in PDFs, which add accessibility descriptions to images in PDF pages.
- AI-enhanced tab grouping, which suggests related tabs and group names.
- Link previews, which show key points before you open a link.
- An AI chatbot in the sidebar, which lets you use your chosen chatbot as you browse, including options like Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Le Chat Mistral.
With the new update, Mozilla aims to provide users with a better platform experience, as in the present time, AI is the new market where every company is focusing to invest and compete with other tech giants.
