Google is set to enable minors aged under 13 to use its AI chatbot, Gemini, on Android smartphones. The application will be compatible with Family Link parental controls, and hence parents can track and control the usage by their children of the tool.

Google Gemini AI for children is coming as a supportive app. Google claims it has taken measures to safeguard children's privacy; data from kids won't be utilised to train the AI.

However, the company owns up to the fact that Gemini, as with all AI technology, is not flawless. In a letter to parents, Google stated that Gemini AI sometimes gets things wrong.

Occasionally, the chatbot may provide inaccurate or misleading responses. It may also display content that parents may not wish children to view.

That's why Google is encouraging families to teach children that Gemini is not a human and they should never reveal confidential details to it.

Other AI systems, such as Character.ai, have had problems with children believing they were talking to actual people.

Moreover, some apps have even distributed inappropriate material. Google is attempting to prevent this by introducing safety measures and ensuring parents remain in control.

When children first use Gemini AI, parents will receive a special notification. They can also opt to turn it off at any time via Google Family Link.
