Google unveils Gemini Live: Seamless conversations across apps and lock screen

Gemini Live, Google's new initiative to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) offerings, will allow users to have a two-way conversation, possibly running in the background as users browse other apps or even on the lock screen.

Strings in Google app 15.27 (beta) indicate how a “background_mode” will let users “continue [Gemini] Live chats while using other apps or while your screen is locked.”

Being able to converse with Gemini as if on a regular phone call will enable the AI to produce a more natural, immersive, and human experience.

The freedom to leave the main UI, surf across different apps, and continue the conversation uninterrupted is a massive step forward in the AI naturalisation process.

New features of Gemini Live

Background mode: Users can continue conversations with Gemini while using other apps or when the screen is locked. This creates a seamless and uninterrupted user experience.

Lock screen functionality: Gemini can set alarms, and timers, or brief users on the weather directly from the lock screen.

Users can get “answers to general questions and more” with “Gemini on lock screen” and “extensions on lock screen.” Options include Messages, Workspace, and Home Automation.

Spoken message notifications: If enabled, Gemini will read users' messages aloud with “Spoken message notifications.”

Usage instructions: To end a conversation, users can say “Stop” to Gemini Live or end the chat by looking for a persistent notification.

Google is working to expand Gemini's capabilities, making it a more integral part of users' daily interactions with their devices.

These updates mark a significant step forward in creating a more interactive and responsive AI experience for users.
