It's undeniable that Karachi is a very densely populated metropolis which has a shortfall of resources when it comes to public transport and road infrastructure, leaving the public in despair as they struggle in their daily commutes.

Given these fundamental issues regarding public transport shortage, the widely concerning query is how many buses Karachi actually needs to meet daily public transport needs. Probably addressing this concern, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah recently claimed that Karachi requires at least 15,000 buses to meet its daily transport needs.

He made this claim during the unveiling of a comprehensive Karachi Transport Master Plan, being carried out in collaboration with the World Bank in a bid to transform the city's mobility.

The city-wide initiative will involve various transport systems, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), metro light rail, and the revival of the Karachi Circular Railway.

When will Karachi's Yellow Line BRT project complete?

Part of this project is the Yellow Line BRT project, stretching 21 kilometres from Dawood Chowrangi to Khalid Bin Waleed Road, which is expected to carry 300,000 passengers daily when completed in December 2025.

During a meeting with a World Bank delegation, Shah referred to the World Bank as “a vital development partner,” emphasising the introduction of electric buses (e-buses) as an essential step towards eco-friendly transport.

Ibrahim Khalil Zaki, the World Bank's Transport practice manager, assured to provide full technical and financial support for the initiative with the aim to make Karachi's transport industry efficient.
