Pakistan’s local mobile phone manufacturing has seen growth in early 2025, as the country manufactured 7.21 million handsets locally between January and March 2025, whereas only 0.54m were imported.

Citing data issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Phone World highlighted that the production of mobile phones reportedly surpassed imports during this period.

It was reported that the shift towards domestic production of smartphones is backed by the government to reduce reliance on imports and make Pakistan self-sufficient in this domain.

In March 2025 alone, 2.33m phones were locally assembled, while only 0.17m were imported. This showed improvement over 2024’s success, when 31.38m units were produced locally and 1.71m were imported.

Out of the 7.21m units made in Q1 2025, 3.12m were smartphones and 4.09m were basic 2G phones. The PTA data also showed that 67% of devices currently active on Pakistani networks are smartphones, while 33% are 2G phones.

The country imported mobile phones of worth $1 billion in the first eight months of FY 2024–25, showing a 12.89% drop from the previous year.
