It's a no-brainer that Karachi's public transport has been struggling with an acute shortfall of buses, exacerbated by inefficiency and poor road infrastructure, meaning a handful of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems could make a huge difference.

Luckily, the Sindh government is expected to launch the Yellow Line BRT in partnership with the World Bank to address the absence of such services.

When will Karachi's Yellow Line BRT launch?

Set for completion in December 2025 as part of an ambitious Karachi Transport Master Plan, the Yellow Line BRT will be inaugurated alongside metro light rail and the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR).

The commendable initiative was revealed by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, as Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, continues to face transport issues to date.

He said that Karachi needs at least 15,000 buses to fulfil the daily public transport requirement.

This project aims to deliver what previous fragmented projects have failed to attain. It is believed to streamline BRT corridors with advanced railroad systems and introduce climate-friendly electric buses.

The BRT service, second after Karachi's one and only Green Line BRT, was launched in 2022 and will span a 21-km corridor from Dawood Chowrangi to Khalid Bin Waleed Road.

The Yellow Line BRT will comprise 36 stations and is expected to serve 300,000 passengers daily. Shah said: “Karachi deserves a transport network that matches its size and importance.”

It was revealed by the Sindh CM at a high-level meeting that the World Bank is playing a critical role in this endeavour as a partner, wherein the former proposed Dhabeji as a hub for transport-related industries.
