Karachiites may face water shortage once again as a power breakdown struck the Dhabeji pumping station, disrupting operations in its second phase and impacting a major water supply line.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) stated that Karachi may face a shortfall of 100 million gallons of water per day (MGD) due to the closure of the pumps and the affected line, as the fault occurred at 6:35am after a sudden electricity outage hit the second phase.
It should be noted that Karachi's main water source — the Dhabeji pumping station — depends heavily on stable power, with even a shortage outage causing instant supply disruptions.
"The line was directly impacted when power was suspended," said the official, adding that the breakdown forced the shutdown of two pumps, resulting in reduced discharge from Line No. 5.
KWSC noted that teams were immediately deployed to the site and are carrying out repairs on an emergency basis.
Last month, KWSC warned citizens to store water in advance, as the metropolitan city faced a temporary disruption due to maintenance work at the Hub Canal.
