The federal government of Pakistan has cut petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs2 per litre each.

The new prices will take effect from May 1, 2025, for the next fortnight, a press release issued by the Finance Division said.

The petrol price has been adjusted from Rs254.63 to Rs252.63 a litre, and high-speed diesel will be available at Rs256.64, lower than Rs258.64 a litre.

However, this revision is in the context of declining international oil prices and a relatively stable exchange rate.

Petroleum prices in Pakistan are revised every 15 days. The revisions are on the basis of trends in the international oil market and fluctuations in currency values.

Notably, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and concerned ministries study the data and make recommendations to the Ministry of Finance, which makes the final adjustments.

Across the world, oil prices have been declining. Brent crude futures fell to $63.48 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate was at $59.68.

Analysts attribute this fall to weakening global demand because of economic uncertainties and an oversupply in the market.

Furthermore, the recent dip in local fuel prices is a component of the government's strategy to augment relaxation on inflationary pressures and to provide relief to the public at large.

Since petrol and diesel are essential commodities, even small price cuts can affect daily mobility, logistics, and household budgets.
