Midjourney is set to introduce an updated web tool, allowing users to edit any uploaded images from the web utilising Midjourney’s generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Midjourney CEO David Holtz confirmed that the new updated tool will be launched “early next week,” and will also let users retexture objects in images to “repaint” their colours and details according to captions.

Taking to the company’s official Discord server, Holtz stated that the upgraded image tool will be limited to a “subset of the current community” to start, with increased human moderation along with “new, more advanced AI moderators” to attempt to prevent abuse.

Holtz said: “Honestly, we’re not sure how to precisely restrict deployment of this feature.” There are risks to introducing these types of editing tools without adequate safeguards in place. They could facilitate copyright infringement on a massive scale, or promote the spread of misleading deepfakes.

According to data from Clarity, a deepfake detection firm, 900% more deepfakes have been produced and uploaded this year compared to last year.

Midjourney hasn’t exactly been a shining example of responsible AI deployment. However, in recent months, the company has taken steps to restrict the spread of deepfakes, including filters for political figures leading up to the United States (US) presidential election.
