As the fate of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has been hanging in the balance for nearly a year, a recent report has emerged suggesting that the PIA privatisation is likely to be finalised by the end of 2025.

The development was brought to light in a list containing state-owned enterprises (SOEs) slated to be sold to private entities. The list was presented by the Privatization Commission to a Senate committee.

Muhammad Ali, the advisor to the privatization commission, told the committee that the PIA privatisation is expected to be completed by December 2025.

The Expression of Interest (EOI) for the impending sale of the national flag carrier is scheduled to be greenlit this month, and potential bidders will be able to carry out due diligence of PIA's assets and liabilities by July. The asset assessment would run through September.

The senate committee was also briefed that buyers who previously submitted their bids to take over PIA will also be included in the second round of the auction.

It's pertinent to note that the PIA is among 84 SOEs controlled by the federal government, out of which 24 have been finalised to be privatised.
