Google has taken a significant step forward with the Pixel Watch 4. Unlike the previous generations, this watch is repairable, allowing users to repair components like the battery or display rather than replacing their watch.
In a recent interview, Google explained how their newest watch inhibits repair. The Pixel Watch 4 features two small T2 screws that are concealed in the band slot. Once users remove them using a T2 Torx screwdriver, they can simply remove the watch’s back and access the internal components.
There is no adhesive in the watch, which makes that process quick and easy for users, while still managing to protect the watch from water with a 5ATM / IP68 rating.
Users can do battery and display replacements without special tools now. The same screwdriver will work for the entire process.
Google also said that spare parts would be available through iFixit, and they had a demonstration completed in just 13 minutes. For the first three generations of Pixel Watches, the complete lack of repair options was a very frustrating experience for end-users.
To top it all off, Google is also claiming they will provide more third-party chargers for the Pixel Watch 4. For years, they've been lacking quality charging accessories for Pixel Watches.
Furthermore, Google plans to work with partners to launch better chargers and possibly multi-device charging docks, similar to those used by Apple Watch owners. The Pixel Watch 4 will start shipping in October.
