In an apprehension of artificial intelligence (AI) replacing humans and taking over the world, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted that autonomous employees leveraging AI will join workforces in 2025.
In line with the rapid evolution taking place in the landscape of AI, Altman wrote in an OpenAI blog post on Monday that the first AI agents will be employed this year, as noted by The Express Tribune.
“We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies,” he wrote.
Underlining a remarkable surge in the adoption of such virtual employees, he noted that AI firms are increasingly developing applications bringing about higher returns on investments (ROIs) in AI.
Microsoft, the biggest backer of OpenAI, recently announced to integration of AI agents—autonomous tools capable of carrying out tasks without human intervention— into its workforce.
According to the publication, first among the early adopters of such autonomous tools is McKinsey, the global consulting giant, which is developing an AI agent to oversee client inquiries and schedule follow-up meetings. According to McKinsey, up to 30% of hours worked in the US are likely to be automated.
