The Sindh government is set to transform the province's transportation infrastructure by launching Pakistan's first government-run taxi service with electric vehicle (EV) taxis by December 2025.
Sindh's Senior Minister for Information, Transportation, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, presided over a high-level meeting in Karachi to speed up project preparations.
In an attempt to encourage environmentally friendly transportation in the province, Memon affirmed that the province would start its own taxi service, initially using electric vehicles.
According to Memon, "PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has taken a special interest in ensuring the public receives modern, eco-friendly, and high-quality transport facilities."
A special fleet of EV taxis will be set aside for women in the first phase, which will be another significant development in the nation's transportation industry.
Environmentally friendly programmes like electric buses, the Pink Bus for women, and the Pink electric scooter programme for female students were already pioneered by the Sindh government.
Memon added that in order to guarantee the project's sustainability, more EV buses and double-decker buses will soon be introduced in Karachi, along with the construction of EV charging stations and associated infrastructure.
Moreover, he emphasised that Karachi's transport sector offers significant investment potential, demonstrating the government's openness to international collaborations.
Through this initiative, Sindh hopes to promote a sustainable transportation system in the province by offering its citizens high-quality, eco-friendly, and modern transportation options.
