As part of Sindh's ongoing efforts to modernise urban transport, it emerged on Tuesday that efforts are underway to bring all ride-hailing services in Karachi under one unified system.
The provincial government is determined to bring platforms like Careem and Yango under one umbrella to ensure legal, safe, and unified travel for passengers, remarked Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
“We are working to bring the online taxi system in Karachi under one umbrella in an integrated and modern manner,” he said during a transport department meeting, Dawn reported.
To further discuss the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to minimise carbon emissions and make Karachi's public transport eco-friendly, several key officials attended the session, including Qasim Naveed Qamar, Asad Zamin, and Kamal Dayo.
The government is exploring models to offer EV taxis to the public on easy and affordable instalments, with plans in place to launch an EV taxi service in the metropolis.
It was also learned that earlier initiatives, such as the women-centred pink scooters programme and double-decker buses for Karachi, are also being worked on to be delivered at the earliest.
The government will also allocate additional funds to expand public transport options with electric buses and women-exclusive services in the next provincial budget.
