Snap on Friday announced the launch of its new wearable later this year, as the company has partnered with AR-glasses focused subsidiary, Specs, and chipmaker Qualcomm.

The company has been testing the launch of the AI glasses — dubbed Spectacles, or merely Specs — for a long time. The newly partnership with Qualcomm shows signs of life for the project. Specs will be powered Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR platforms, which are its systems-on-a-chip designed to power augmented and virtual reality devices.

“Through long-term strategic roadmap alignment and technical collaboration, both companies will work together to rapidly bring industry-leading capabilities to the Specs platform, including on-device AI, cutting-edge graphics, and advanced multiuser digital experiences,” the companies say in a joint statement.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel stated: "Our work with Qualcomm provides a strong foundation for the future of Specs, bringing developers and consumers advanced technology and performance that pushes the boundaries of what's possible."

The Specs unit aims to give more independence to the team that is working on smart glasses and also open rooms for external investment.

Earlier, Snap turned its smart glasses team into its own company, and at that time, it reiterated the 2026 launch for consumer Specs.
