A little over a year since introducing its AI DJ feature, Spotify has now launched a new AI-driven capability, dubbed AI Playlist. Initially available to Premium members in the UK and Australia, this beta feature allows users to create playlists through text-based prompts.
Spotify has suggested some creative prompt ideas for users seeking inspiration: "a playlist of indie folk tunes that feel like a warm embrace for the mind" or "soothing tracks to ease the discomfort of allergy season." The range of possibilities is vast. Users can request playlists for various scenarios like "tunes that get me excited for baseball season," "songs to battle an alien invasion," "a playlist with an eerie vibe for painting clowns," or "tracks that transport me into a movie scene."
In addition, Spotify is considering price hikes in certain markets. This could impact users differently based on their location.
Prompts can encompass a broad range of themes including locations, animals, activities, cinematic characters, colours, or even emojis. Spotify's AI will select songs from different genres, eras, and artists, but will also tailor these selections to your personal tastes. There are some restrictions though: prompts should avoid branding, current affairs, or non-musical content. Spotify also notes that it has safeguards against offensive prompts.
After a playlist is generated, users can fine-tune it with additional instructions like "include more recent tracks" or "focus on slower tempo." You also have the option to swipe away specific tracks you don't want.
