In a first, Albania has appointed an artificial intelligence (AI) bot as a new minister to oversee public procurement and counter corruption.

Regarding the inclusion of an AI bot in the parliament, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the innovation will help eliminate corruption in the country.

The bot, named Diella—meaning “sun” in Albanian—will be responsible for managing and awarding all public tenders where the government contracts private companies.

Announcing his new cabinet, Rama stated: “Diella is the first cabinet member who isn’t physically present but is created by AI.”

The Albanian PM expressed hope that Diella would help make Albania free from corruption encompassing public tenders, Reuters reported.

Some citizens remain sceptical, as one Facebook user commented: “Even Diella will be corrupted in Albania.” As the new parliament prepares to convene, it remains to be seen if the government will be approved or not.

The remarkable AI feat comes as public tenders in Albania have been notorious for scandals, and the country has struggled with high-level corruption, impeding its ambitious goal to join the European Union by 2030.
