Amazon has announced that it is developing AI-powered smart glasses designed to give delivery drivers a more efficient and hands-free experience on the job.
The e-commerce giant says the new glasses will allow drivers to scan packages, follow turn-by-turn directions, and capture proof of delivery, all without needing to use their phones.
Amazon’s AI-driven smart glasses features
With a built-in camera operated by AI and computer vision, smart glasses project critical information like hazards or delivery instructions right into the driver’s field of view.
Amazon claims that it activates as the delivery driver arrives and parks the vehicle at the delivery destination. The smart glasses help locate the customer’s package inside the delivery vehicle and offer walking directions for the driver. This function is beneficial for delivering to locations like multi-unit apartments or business complexes.
A small controller, worn inside the delivery vest, is connected to each pair of smart glasses. The controller allows the driver to access critical controls, swap the battery, and access an emergency button.
According to the company, the smart glasses can also be worn with prescription and transitional lenses that change automatically based upon changing light.
Amazon’s AI-driven smart glasses availability
Amazon is currently testing the smart glasses in North America and, before adding trial locations across the globe, intends to refine the system. Delivery drivers can increase delivery speed and efficiency while providing less distraction and having less need to switch from their screen to their surroundings.
