Anthropic has launched its Claude chatbot as a Chrome browser extension, allowing users to automate online tasks directly from their web browser. The feature is currently available in beta and can only be accessed by paying subscribers, the company announced.

The new Claude Chrome extension enables users to browse websites, fill out online forms, manage scheduled tasks, and work across multiple tabs at the same time.

With this update, Claude moves beyond simple chat responses and takes on a more active role in helping users complete everyday web-based tasks.

How does Claude extension work?

To start using the extension, one has to pay the subscription fee for Claude Pro at $20 per month. This is well priced, considering that the initial plan under the beta version prior to its launch required users to pay $200 per month.

However, that plan was only available for Chromium browsers, which comprise Google Chrome, Brave, and Opera.

It’s worth noting that the extension ‘Claude’ does not work with Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge browsers.

Anthropic asserted that it has measures to ensure safety and security issues regarding the use of AI browser tools. Prompt injection presents a significant danger because any malicious or deceptive text can be injected into the chatbot by web pages.

To mitigate such a threat, the add-on enables users to set and control site permissions to either grant or deny the chatbot access to certain web pages.

For added safety, users will also be warned by Claude beforehand before engaging in high-risk activities, like posting information online and sharing private information.

In some situations, the chatbot may automatically restrict itself from high-risk sites, including financial-related and torrent-related sites.
