The widely acclaimed AI tycoon, Anthropic, is gearing up to open its first office in India, slated to be inaugurated in Bengaluru in early 2026, marking the start of its expansion to Asia.
Anthropic's arrival in India comes amid ongoing US-Indian tensions and pressure from Washington regarding manufacturing and chip production in the region. Regardless of this repression, Anthropic appears confident in moving forward into the rapidly growing Indian, as well as Asian, AI ecosystem.
It must also be noted that India is becoming crucial to Anthropic’s global strategy, now ranking as the second-largest market for its Claude AI, while the US is the largest.
According to Reuters, Anthropic's India office will enable it to tap into the country’s rich talent pool of engineers, researchers, and language experts.
Anthropic Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith said: “Our expansion comes at a pivotal moment when Indian enterprises and startups are seeking AI models they can trust.”
The new hub will focus on several key areas:
- Localisation: Tailoring AI tools to Indian languages and cultural contexts, enhancing support for languages like Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi.
- Talent and research: Hiring local experts to collaborate with global teams.
- Partnerships and policy engagement: Working with Indian institutions on AI safety and governance.
With India's AI landscape becoming more competitive and regulated, Anthropic’s new office will help it foster innovation in the region.
