In the wake of nonstop advancement in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), Apple has teamed up with AI startup Anthropic to develop a new AI coding assistant for Xcode, its primary software development platform.
The AI assistant will be powered by Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet language model and will save time by helping developers generate, edit and test code more efficiently.
As reported by TechCrunch, “vibe coding”, Apple's upcoming coding assistant, is currently in the testing phase and is expected to be released to third-party developers upon successful inspection.
The move signals Apple’s deeper push into generative AI as it tries to keep pace with rivals like Google and Samsung, both of whom have already rolled out AI features across their devices.
For Anthropic, the partnership could provide a much-needed boost as it competes with bigger players such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Elon Musk’s xAI. Claude’s models are known for their reasoning capabilities and flexibility in different coding environments.
Apple previously tried to launch an internal AI tool called Swift Assist in 2024, but the project was abandoned due to concerns about code accuracy and slowdowns in developer workflows.
The new Claude-integrated coding assistant is expected to support Swift, the language used to build apps for iOS, macOS, and other Apple platforms.
The collaboration highlights Apple’s growing dependence on external AI firms as it seeks to strengthen its developer tools and remain competitive in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
