Shortly after it was subjected to a widespread backlash involving confusion, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) repealed its draft amendments to the Baggage Rules.

With the proposed changes nullified, passengers or travellers landing in Pakistan from abroad can now carry two mobile phones.

Citing sources, The News reported that the amendments aimed to prevent travellers from bringing home goods worth over $1,200. As it stood, devices or gadgets other than that were to be ceased.

Updated Baggage Rules in Pakistan

“The amendments in the Baggage Rules have been instructed to be withdrawn and now the Customs high-ups will hold broader consultations and come up with any desired changes in the rules,” FBR Chairman Rashid Mehmood Langrial said on Tuesday while taking notice of the issue.

To ensure the withdrawal of the draft amendments, the FBR chairman also issued directives to the Customs authorities to withdraw the amendments it proposed.

Under the freshly updated draft, goods valued over $1,200 were classified as commercial. The release of goods above this threshold was irreversible even with payment of duties, taxes, or fines.
